The Elderly Support Uganda (ESUGA), in partnership with the Anadolu Foundation, has successfully commissioned three community boreholes in Wantunda Village and Kasozi Village in Jinja District, providing hundreds of households with sustainable access to clean and safe water. The project marks a significant milestone in the two organizations’ shared commitment to improving the lives of elderly people and other vulnerable members of the community through sustainable Environment, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (E-WASH) interventions.
For many years, residents especially older persons, women, and children have struggled to access safe water, often walking long distances to unreliable water sources. The newly commissioned boreholes will significantly reduce these hardships by providing a reliable supply of clean water close to their homes. The project is expected to improve public health, reduce the incidence of waterborne diseases, enhance sanitation and hygiene practices. Equally, this will restore dignity to elderly people who previously faced considerable physical challenges in collecting water.
The commissioning ceremony was attended by community leaders, local residents, and representatives from both partner organizations. The Anadolu Foundation was represented by its Director, Dr. Menya, who emphasized the importance of investing in essential community services that create sustainable impact. “Access to clean water is a fundamental human right and the foundation of healthy, productive communities. At the Anadolu Foundation, we believe that sustainable development begins by meeting people’s most basic needs. We are proud to partner with ESUGA on this life-changing initiative and remain committed to supporting projects that improve health, dignity, and opportunities for vulnerable communities across Uganda”. Menya revealed.
While ESUGA was represented by its Deputy Executive Director, Mr. Mayanja Abubakar, who expressed appreciation to the Anadolu Foundation, community leaders, and all stakeholders who made the project possible. “Today is more than the commissioning of boreholes—it is the restoration of hope and dignity for elderly people and families who have endured the burden of unsafe and distant water sources for many years. We sincerely thank the Anadolu Foundation for believing in our mission and for standing with us in transforming lives. Together, we are building healthier, stronger, and more resilient communities.” Mayanja Stressed.
Beyond providing safe drinking water, the boreholes will improve hygiene, reduce time spent fetching water, support household livelihoods, and contribute to the long-term social and economic development of the beneficiary communities. Although this achievement is worth celebrating, many communities across Busoga sub-region and Uganda at large continue to lack access to clean and safe water. ESUGA and the Anadolu Foundation remain committed to expanding their E-WASH programmes to reach more underserved communities, particularly those with large populations of elderly people and other vulnerable groups.
