Esuga Elderly Support Uganda (ESUGA), in collaboration with its development partners Bilal Muslim Organization and Hon. Sarah Lwansasula, Woman Member of Parliament for Jinja City, recently carried out a large-scale food donation initiative benefiting over four hundred vulnerable individuals in the Busoga Sub-region of Eastern Uganda.
A total of four hundred and ten (410) beneficiaries, primarily elderly persons and other vulnerable community members, received essential food items during the outreach exercise. The beneficiaries were drawn from several districts within the Busoga region, including Jinja City, Jinja District, Kamuli District, Buyende District, Luuka District, Iganga District, and Mayuge District.
While addressing beneficiaries and members of the media, the Executive Director of ESUGA, Dr. Rajab Idd Muyingo, emphasized the importance of supporting elderly persons and vulnerable households within communities.
“Feeding elderly persons is our collective responsibility. Together with our development partners, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of vulnerable communities across Busoga and Uganda as a whole,” Dr. Muyingo noted.
The donated food items, valued at approximately thirty-eight million three hundred and eighty thousand Uganda shillings (UGX 38,380,000), included rice, maize flour, wheat flour, beans, sugar, milk, dates, cooking oil, salt, and soap. These essential supplies are expected to help stabilize household food security and support the wellbeing of elderly beneficiaries.
Dr. Muyingo further noted that food insecurity remains one of the most pressing challenges affecting elderly persons in Uganda. Through initiatives such as this, ESUGA continues to fulfill its mission of improving the lives of elderly persons by addressing their immediate needs while promoting sustainable community resilience.
The initiative forms part of ESUGA’s Food Security and Nutrition Assistance Programme, which focuses on providing timely support to vulnerable groups while strengthening long-term community support systems.
